Issue No. 5: A Masterpiece
March 28, 2020
Dear Readers,
Who the fuck do I think I am? I've been indoors for the better part of the last eighteen days and I haven't sent a newsletter?
Honestly, I think social distancing is mostly great. I am getting caught up on everyone's favorite movies, I started The Wire, I floss now. I spend a lot of time in bed.
Part of my lazing about in bed involved me fantasizing about writing the SDNL (and, starting a few seconds ago, actually writing it). I thought to myself many times, "this time I'm going deep. This time I write a masterpiece!" I imagined everyone's reactions. They will say, "Whoa. This time Sarah went deep and wrote a fucking masterpiece."
I mean I was thinking metaphors, similes, ekphrasis. Exotic settings! Penetrating meaning! The zeitgeist!!!
I built it up in my head so much, the symbolism and lush imagery and so on, that I realized there was no actual content there. At all.
I'm still working on it in my brain, but in order not to totally stagnate, I'm sending along a few small things I've written. The first is a piece I wrote for Full Blede called "Perfect Trail Mix Bites."
The second piece is fulfilling a request from my friend Daniel: short reviews of popular, well known movies that I haven't seen. If you know me, you know that I don't really give a shit about movies or watch them very much, and I haven't seen most movies most people have seen. That is changing giving the current restrictions in today's world, so my new assignment for myself is to actually watch all the movies I review and send you my updated thoughts in the next newsletter.
The third piece is something that I've always thought "should" be longer, but I just decided it's fine as is.
Cheers from the indoors,
Sarah
